This blog is about me and my misadventures to get lost in the beautiful city that we live in… as well as some of my random mumblings
If you are anything like my husband and I, then weekend adventures are something of a not-so-rare occurrence. Living in Joburg, one can get into a comfort zone quite easily, and so we often like to venture out of the Northern Suburbs, and find something new and interesting to do.
Often, these adventures tend to involve something of a road trip – all the better, and so if you are up for a bit of a drive, and a splashy-out meal, head out to Hartbeespoort for one of the best restaurants I can vouch for; Silver Orange Bistro.
Set on a beautiful citrus farm, Silver Orange Bistro is an exquisite boutique country restaurant, that has won numerous awards; the latest being the American Express Platinum Award Fine Dining 2013. When I was there last, I read that the Bistro was transformed from the chef’s granny’s country house– or something of the sort – and transformed it they have. There are stunning chandeliers in each of the rooms, and the décor is quite decadent.
Before you embark on your quest, make sure that you are hungry. The food is utterly delectable. I had an ostrich Carpaccio to start, followed by a very tender fillet served on a bed of julienne vegetables. I hear the desserts are fantastic as well! The food is displayed beautifully and whilst this is a place of fine dining, it is reminiscent of a home away from home.
Bookings are a must! So make sure that you phone early in advance. And if you are not up for a sit down meal, you can book a picnic basket in their gardens, or join one of their occasional wine-tastings.
