This blog is about me and my misadventures to get lost in the beautiful city that we live in… as well as some of my random mumblings
Two growing trends on the Joburg scene are Night Markets and Craft Beer. For those of you who know us, my hubby and I are serious fans of markets, so are happy to indulge in a few nightly ones. Although neither of us are really beer drinkers, there is something about the vibe and aesthetic design of craft beer places that lures us to them, and so again, we are happy to indulge.
Last week, like good stewards of Jozi social life, we partook in both of these trends. On Thursday night we went to the House and Leisure Night Market at Katy’s Palace Bar, and on Saturday we tried out the new craft beer bar called Society in Magaliesig.
Katy’s Palace, located in Kramerville amongst some of the most awesome home and décor shops (including the Wetherly’s factory shop), and is an incredible venue. From the outside it looks a bit like a monstrous shack, but inside the décor is very ‘hipster-chic.’ It’s pretty because it looks unfinished.
Tickets to the market were only R45 and included a three month digital subscription of House and Leisure magazine, as well as a fab little bag to keep all your stall-bought goodies in. Although the market started at 17h00, we only arrived at 18h00 and by this time, it was already packed. We managed to manoeuvre ourselves to the bar, and around to the various SA vendors and artisans without spilling our drinks.
Despite the fact that we didn’t buy much, we certainly could have. A flurry of local talent was showcasing their goods, with designers such as handmade leather craftsmen label Bark and Mill, Black Betty Jewellery, Ceramic Factory, and loads of others. We did dig into some home-made burgers from Ginger and Fig, and buy a take home dessert of Nova “Chocolate with Soul.”
It was a great night out, and a fun thing to do as a change from the usual restaurant, so I’d definitely recommend buying your tickets for the second edition later in the year. The next House and Leisure Night Market is happening on the 6th of November 2014. And if you’re less of a night owl but still want to suss out the vibe, I have heard that Katy’s does phenomenal lunches on the first Sunday of every month.
In keeping with the latest trends – and also celebrating two birthdays – we headed to the new local craft beer bar @SocietyEatery. It is situated in the very unassuming Merrowdown Plaza in Fourways, but is a pub that packs a punch. With numerous Society branded beers on tap, including an incredibly delicious Dragon Ginger Beer beer, and tasty food, it’s a crafty twist on the old-school pub. Definitely worth a visit.
Oh, and by the way, if you are a bubbly fan like me… @SocietyEatery has bottomless Boschendal Bubbly every Monday – Friday between 12h00 – 15h00. Winner!
